Saints' Newlove back from the brink
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Paul Newlove is poised to play his first game for St Helens since last June after recovering from a potentially career-ending injury.
The Great Britain centre snapped his Achilles tendon midway through last season. "There was a very real danger that Paul would never play again," said his coach, Ian Millward, yesterday as he named him in his squad to play Warrington in the Challenge Cup on Saturday.
"Paul has made tremendous progress over the last couple of weeks. He is doing all the training with the squad and I will make a decision about whether to play him later in the week."
The Wigan hooker, Terry Newton, is reported to have become a target for the Australian club the Sydney Roosters, however his contract at the JJB does not run out until the end of the 2003 season.
Newton's former Leeds team-mate, Adrian Morley, is with the Roosters – although he is a long-term Wigan target – while two young Englishmen, Keith Mason from Wakefield and Warrington's Ian Sibbit, have joined Melbourne. Others, including Castleford's Danny Orr, are supposedly on the wanted lists of Australian clubs.
The Australian Test coach, Chris Anderson, has returned to his club duties with Cronulla after a triple heart by-pass. Anderson was twice taken ill during the Ashes series in the autumn and recuperated in England until the New Year.
Swinton have hit back at claims that they would be a financial drain on their neighbours, Salford, if they were allowed to move in with them. The Northern Ford Premiership club wants to move from Bury, where it has spent the last decade, but has been turned down by the Reds. "We have offered them personal financial guarantees," said the Swinton chief executive, Tony Barrow.
