Morley snubs Britain to stay at Roosters
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Great Britain forward, Adrian Morley, has disappointed several Super League clubs, headed by his former employers at Leeds, by signing a new three-year contract to stay with the Sydney Roosters.
Morley is in his third year with the Australian club, where his form has been outstanding. Their chief executive, Bernie Gurr, said that he had turned down bigger offers from Britain to stay with the Roosters.
Better news for British clubs seeking star quality could be that the former Australian Test captain, Brad Fittler, has broken off talks over a new contract with the Roosters. Wigan would head the list of Super League sides who would love to attract Fittler to this country to end his career.
It is already a time of comings and goings at Wigan, with Quentin Pongia arriving next week for a short stint, but Jamie Ainscough and Brett Dallas on their way out.
For tonight's match at Bradford, Brian Carney and Danny Sculthorpe return to their side after injury, while the Bulls recall James Lowes and Lesley Vainikolo after a rest last weekend.
Tomorrow, Widnes hope to break their ground record by attracting over 9,000 for their derby against Warrington. The visitors hope that Lee Briers will be able to resume after the back and hamstring trouble that kept him out last week, but they have the 18-year-old half back Jamie Durbin, on standby to make his debut if the captain fails to make it.
Leigh delayed the announcement of their new assistant coach yesterday, but are expected to confirm Tommy Martyn in the role this morning, as well as clinching the deal for him to play for his home-town club. The National League Ome side would also like to bring Tim Jonkers across from St Helens, although neither is likely to be able to play against the promotion favourites, Salford, tomorrow.
Leigh are a point clear at the top of the table, but are without the injured Paul Rowley and Neil Turley, plus the suspended Dale Cardoza.
Halifax have parted company with the New Zealander Anthony Seuseu, after the front-rower struggled to hold down a first-team place during his half season with the club.
He was not selected for last week's match against Widnes and, in a statement, Halifax said today they had terminated by "mutual consent" the contract of the former Auckland Warrior, who joined them at Christmas.
The Russian side, Strella Kazan, are the favourites to win the York International 9's this weekend, although they will face opposition from throughout the northern hemisphere in this year's expanded tournament. The proceedings also include an amateur international between England and Scotland this afternoon.
