McGuire hoping to sparkle for All Gold Test

Danny McGuire gets the first chance to prove that he is the answer to Great Britain's problematic stand-off position when he plays for the Northern Union against New Zealand on Saturday.

The Leeds player is the only participant in last weekend's Super League Grand Final who is being asked to play in the match, which commemorates the first overseas rugby league tour 100 years ago.

"Danny has come through well," said Tony Smith, his coach at Leeds and now for Great Britain. "He's hit good form and wants have another crack at it for the Test series."

Smith will name his side for the first of three Tests against the All Golds on Sunday, with Leon Pryce the other candidate.

The Northern Union line-up also includes two forwards looking to be noticed. Wakefield's Richard Moores and Sam Burgess of Bradford will start on the bench, but will get their chance to show that they could be used as impact players against the Kiwis.

The former deputy prime minister John Prescott has become associate director of Hull KR with the aims of strengthening the club's links with the community.
