McDermott quits 'taxing' Quins job to join the Rhinos
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Brian McDermott is leaving his job as coach of Harlequins to join the staff at Leeds. The former Bradford and Great Britain prop has been in charge at The Stoop for four seasons and has shown a fierce commitment to keeping the code alive in London, but he was a candidate for the job at Bradford, before Mick Potter was appointed.
"I've really enjoyed my four years at Harlequins, but I now feel the time is right to hand over the reins," he said. "I want to spend more time with my family in Yorkshire."
The news that he is leaving comes after a continuing struggle to avoid the wooden spoon and the loss of a number of players for next season. It is, as the Quins' chairman, David Hughes, said yesterday "the hardest job in Super League".
The Huddersfield prop, Keith Mason, has been banned for three matches for standing on Stuart Fielden's leg against Wigan. His team-mate, Darrell Griffin, has received a one-match ban for his part in the ensuing fight, with Fielden also suspended for one. Jordan Tansey of Hull has been suspended for two matches after being sent off for a dangerous throw against Crusaders.
