The Wolves earned the right to choose their opponents under the controversial ClubCall system and McDermott says their selection will give the Rhinos extra motivation in their bid to reach the Grand Final. "There is a big gut feeling about a group of people saying: 'We don't think you're as strong as the other team'," he said.
"That will have a bearing no matter what I'm trying to say to the players and no matter how much they talk about it not really having a bearing."
The free-scoring Wolves scored 82 points in two Super League meetings with Leeds since routing them 30-6 at Wembley last year but McDermott's men began the season with key players Jamie Peacock and Danny McGuire on the injury list.
Their return helped turn around the club's fortunes and the Rhinos have begun to hit their straps with four wins since losing to Wigan in the Challenge Cup final, the sort of form McDermott believes makes them title contenders.
