Hull sign up Best and make offer for Barnett

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hull have confirmed the signing of the Cronulla back, Colin Best, on a two-year contract. Best had been a target for the club for several weeks.
Their coach, Shaun McRae, said yesterday: "Colin represents a major acquisition for our organisation. He brings a wealth of experience for a man so young."
In contrast to some other high-profile signings from Australia, Best is very much in his prime at 23. "It was a big decision to come to England so early in my career, but after talking to Shaun McRae I had no doubts that I had made the right decision," he said.
Hull have also made an offer of a two-year contract to the London Broncos and New Zealand full-back, Richie Barnett, and hope for an answer from him by the end of the week. Barnett is also considering offers from two other Super League clubs, thought to be Leeds and Bradford.
Hull are also being linked with David Furner. The Australia Test forward is not being retained by Wigan and is looking for a new club in England. Widnes and Warrington have already shown interest, but because McRae worked with Furner at Canberra and with Australia, Hull may be the favourites to sign him.
Adrian Lam, Wigan's in-form scrum-half, is staying at the club for another year, and may add a further year after that. "He has exercised his option for another year and obviously we are delighted," the Wigan chairman, Maurice Lindsay, said.
St Helens' New Zealand international, Sean Hoppe, has announced that he is to retire at the end of this season, his third with the club. The departure of the 31-year-old wing or centre, who has also played in the pack when required, leaves a vacancy on Saints' import quota for Jason Hooper, the St George-Illawarra utility player whom they hope to add to their squad next season.
London Broncos have taken Teddy Sadaoui, a 6ft 3in threequarter from Carcassonne, on trial as part of the Broncos' link-up with the French club.
The Leeds and Great Britain prop, Barrie McDermott, has been suspended for four matches after being sent off for striking Bradford's Stuart Fielden in last Friday's Super League match. McDermott is considering an appeal.
