Fielden appeals ban
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Wigan prop, Stuart Fielden, has been suspended for tomorrow night's Challenge Cup quarter-final against Salford, despite being found not guilty of foul and abusive language.
Fielden was caught on camera mouthing expletives during Wigan's defeat at Warrington last Friday, but argued successfully that the outburst was aimed at a player, not the referee, Ben Thaler. He was, however, found guilty of raising his knee going into a tackle, banned for one match and fined £300. He plans to appeal today.
Two other Super League props have had their immediate futures resolved by a novel loan-swap deal. Danny Sculthorpe, the Wakefield forward banned for a week by the club for drinking on the team bus, has gone to Huddersfield for the rest of the season.
In return, Michael Korkidas has gone back to the club for which he played between 2003 and 2005, before leaving to play with less success for Salford and Castleford.
The Wakefield coach, John Kear, is glad to see him back at Belle Vue. "He was here when I first joined the club and was sorry to leave," he said. "I look forward to seeing him back in a Wakefield shirt." Korkidas could be back in that shirt as early as Saturday night as Kear plans major changes for the trip to Celtic Crusaders.
Sculthorpe will have to wait a little longer for his Huddersfield debut, as he is cup-tied for this Sunday's quarter-final against Castleford.
