Dragons' move for Kear falls through
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Wakefield have confirmed that their coach John Kear is staying with them – for another season at least – rather than joining Catalan Dragons.
The former Paris St Germain and French national coach was the man the Catalans wanted to replace Kevin Walters, who is leaving at the end of the season.
Kear was interviewed but the deal foundered on the issue of compensation to Wakefield for the remaining year of his contract. "Faced with the possibility of having to pay Wakefield compensation, the Dragons have switched their attention from their favoured choice," a Wakefield statement said.
"I was flattered to be identified by the Catalan Dragons and interested to hear of their plans for the future," Kear said.
Kear has been at the club since 2006 and last year guided them to fifth place in Super League.
Ben Galea has pledged his future to Hull KR. The Australian forward has agreed a one-year contract extension.
