Davis left Cas for Wakefield at the end of the 2000 season and has been playing and coaching in France with Villeneuve this year.
Castleford, four points adrift at the foot of Super League, have identified him as the player to steer them to safety, but the Australian has already signed a contract to play and coach at Halifax. As compensation, Halifax could take as many as six Castleford players on loan.
Castleford are still trying to extend Luke Robinson's loan from Wigan.
