The Castleford coach gave every indication in the disappointment following Saturday's defeat by Wakefield that he would be leaving the club.
He will have a meeting today, however, at which club officials will try to persuade him to carry on in National League One next season.
"Ideally, I'd like to stay, but the financial situation is all changed by relegation," said the former Brisbane and London player. "We're definitely staying in England. My daughter is going to finish her schooling here and she has another four or five years to go."
There remain a couple of shreds of hope for Castleford. One is that Whitehaven or Batley, who are not eligible for promotion, could win NL1. The other is that other Super League clubs could rally around, as suggested by the Tigers chief executive, Richard Wright, and insist on the club being included in a 13-team competition next season.
That is something Matterson would applaud. "I know a lot of clubs up at the top of the league would agree with it," he said. "I feel as though we've started something here and so many plans now have to be put on hold."
Cas have already conceded that two international forwards signed for next season, Shaun Timmins and Awen Guttenbeil, will not now be joining them.
