Calderwood waits for call to bow out as hero
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mark Calderwood could receive an unexpected late chance to leave Wigan as a hero tonight. The England winger has had a generally undistinguished three seasons at the club and was confirmed yesterday as a Hull signing on a two-year contract after not being offered a new deal by Wigan. He was not in the squad for the play-off against Bradford, but the illness of an unnamed back could win him a late call-up.
That will be the ideal opportunity for Calderwood, because at the same stage against the same opponents he scored three tries in a 31-30 fightback victory last year.
Wigan's ability to progress this time has been compromised by being kicked off the JJB Stadium because Wigan Athletic are at home tomorrow, but their coach, Brian Noble, says they will put that out of their minds when they take the field at their temporary home at Widnes.
Wigan are providing free coaches for supporters who have bought tickets, but there is still talk of a fans' boycott.
