Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Huddersfield groped their way into second place in Super League with a victory that was interrupted by a floodlight failure. Danny Brough was the Giants' guiding light, with two tries, five goals and an outstanding all-round kicking game.
It has been a gloomy early Spring for the Robins, who have two wins from seven matches. But their coach, Justin Morgan, refused to blame the power-cut for his side's underpowered performance, and indeed they started brightly enough. Their high-profile recent arrival, Willie Mason, made his mark in the most unexpected way, putting in a pin-point cross kick for Kris Welham to score in the second minute.
The Giants' response was two tries in 10 minutes, both owing a lot to their full-back, Scott Grix. He has had one of the hardest jobs in Super League this year, taking over from Brett Hodgson, but the way he came into the line to release Jermaine McGillvary with a looping pass showed his attacking qualities. Nathan Brown called McGillvary's display, which also featured a couple of try-saving tackles, "his best yet for Huddersfield."
Grix was there again to capitalise on David Faiumu's incisive break and use an inside ball to send in Brough, who then kicked his second goal.
One of the floodlight pylons failed before half-time, forcing Rovers to turn out all four sets of lights during an extended interval, in the hope that they would all function afterwards. When the lights worked, Huddersfield readjusted first, Kevin Brown and Lee Gilmour opening up the defence for Michael Lawrence to score.
After David Hodgson had lost the ball, however, Ben Fisher twisted his way over the line to bring Rovers back into it. Then Brough and Gilmour both kicked ahead for Brough to score his second.
The Robins clung on to a little hope when Welham went in for his second try, from Scott Murrell's pass. But again they conceded immediately after scoring, Luke Robinson's break setting up Grix. Robinson and Hodgson both battled their way over in the last three minutes to play to complete a comfortable winning margin.
