Ambitious Giants snatch Sarsfield
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England academy back-row forward Matthew Sarsfield has moved from Wigan to Huddersfield in search of a quicker opportunity in Super League.
Sarsfield, who played in the recent victories over Australian Schools, has signed a three-year contract with the Giants and is in line to make his debut in the trial game at Batley on Sunday.
He is likely to play alongside his former Wigan Academy team-mate Jon Molloy.
"This is a super signing for us and it shows how highly we are now regarded in the game," said Huddersfield's managing director, Richard Thewlis.
Sarsfield was also a target for Wakefield, who already have two of last year's Wigan Academy squad, Stuart Howarth and Josh Veivers, on their books.
England might have to face their nemesis, Darren Lockyer, one more time this autumn. The Brisbane and Australia captain, 33, was expected to retire after last year's Four Nations but has declared himself available for state and country, and will start as favourite to retain his place at stand-off for both of them.
