Twenty-four hours earlier, Adrian Maguire won the Pertemps King George VI Chase on Florida Pearl and it was Jason, his 19-year-old nephew, who produced a similarly positive piece of riding to take the big race on 20-1 chance Tremallt.
The 10-year-old was headed on the run to the final fence as Strong Paladin and Cadougold made their challenges. But Strong Paladin blundered badly and Maguire conjured a brave rally from Tremallt who led again on the run-in and held off Strong Paladin's renewed effort by a short-head.
Tom George, Tremallt's trainer, said: "I have been trying to give Jason some opportunities as he really deserves them. This makes up for when Tremallt fell at the last in the Racing Post Chase last season."
Fondmort remains en-route for the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, following his success in the opening Wayward Lad Novices' Chase while stablemate Greenhope has the Triumph Hurdle, for which he has been given a 25-1 quote by Victor Chandler, as his target after completing a double for Nicky Henderson in the Executive Network Juvenile Novices' Hurdle.
Mick Fitzgerald, who rode both winners for his boss, was stood down for the remainder of the meeting after suffering a bruised ankle in a fall from Chalmers Place in the race won by Tremallt. He will have to pass the doctor before taking his rides at Haydock today.
