Racing: Hughes returns at Newbury
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Richard Hughes will return to the saddle at Newbury today, having recovered from the back problem that caused him to miss Glorious Goodwood.
The 31-year-old, who is retained to ride the horses of Prince Khalid Abdullah, has not ridden since the meeting at Newmarket on 23 July, when he complained of severe back pains. Fortunately, the injury was not as serious as first feared and the jockey was diagnosed with a slipped disc.
Hughes, who takes eight rides at Newbury, said: "I've had an epidural and the back does not hurt any more. I've ridden out for the past three days, and I can't wait to get back."
Seb Sanders has been booked to ride the well-fancied Jagger in next week's Ebor at York. Gerard Butler's grey has been near the head of the betting for the one-mile-six-furlong contest since he put in a very good performance at Goodwood last month.
