Racing: Baracouda cruises to victory
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Baracouda cruised to success in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Ascot Hurdle yesterday. Always travelling within himself, some 20 lengths off the early pace set by Kates Charm, Thierry Doumen's mount loomed up behind the leaders on the home turn and sped clear on the run-in to beat Hors La Loi III by nine lengths.
Tony McCoy's mount, Rodock, who had been well backed, had not really been put into the race and was going well when falling at the third-last flight.
The winner, making his first appearance for 210 days, hurdled fluently throughout and showed a fine turn of foot to go clear inside the final 150 yards.
Baracouda's owner, JP McManus, said: "Down the road the aim is the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham and that is the race that matters the most this season." Coral make Baracouda the even-money favourite (from 7-4) for that race.
