Australian Open champion Sharapova had won 18 straight matches before running into Kuznetsova, who will meet top seed Ana Ivanovic in today's final. Ivanovic edged past fellow Serb Jelena Jankovic 7-6 6-3.
Unseeded Mardy Fish shocked David Nalbandian 6-3 6-7 7-6 to set up a last-four meeting with Roger Federer. The world No 1, who is trying to reach his first final of 2008, received a walkover when Germany's Tommy Haas – who knocked out Andy Murray – withdrew from their quarter-final with a sinus infection.
Sailing: Clinical Laser display brings hat-trick of golds
Paul Goodison and Nick Dempsey matched Ben Ainslie's success to make it a hat-trick of gold medals for Great Britain at the Princess Sofia Trophy. They won the single-handed Laser class and RS:X windsurfing respectively in Palma, Majorca.
Nick Thompson also took silver in the Laser event. Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson won silver in the Yngling women's keelboat fleet, while Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark clinched bronze in the 470.
Swimming: Davies joins record-breaking fab four in seizing silver
David Davies of Wales claimed silver in the 1,500m freestyle at the European Championships in Eindhoven yesterday. Russia's Yuri Prilukov took gold. Britain's Jo Jackson, Mel Marshall, Ellen Gandy and Caitlin McClatchey broke national and Commonwealth records in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay to win silver too.
Cricket: Iqbal hits ton to run Ireland out of town
Bangladesh whitewashed Ireland 3-0 by winning the third one-day international by 79 runs at Mirpur. The hosts made 293 for 7 with Tamim Iqbal scoring 129 off 137 balls and Dave Langford-Smith taking 3 for 53. Niall O'Brien top-scored with 70 for Ireland but they were bowled out for 214 after four run-outs.
