Sport In Brief: Benjamin is miles too good for Canada as Churchill Cup bows out
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The England Saxons won the Churchill Cup yesterday, by beating Canada 37-6 at Sixways. In the other matches staged at Worcester, the USA won the bowl with a 33-25 victory over Russia and Italy A won the plate by beating Tonga 27-18.
The Worcester wing Miles Benjamin scored two tries for the Saxons and the Sale flanker James Gaskell, the Gloucester wing Charlie Sharples and the London Irish lock Jamie Gibson also scored. The Harlequins fly-half Rory Clegg kicked 12 points; James Pritchard kicked a penalty and Ander Monro dropped a goal for Canada.
England's second team won six of the nine Churchill Cups played since 2003, the other winners being New Zealand Maori (2004, 2006) and Ireland A (2009). The tournament will not return next season as the USA and Canada, the RFU's partners in the event, have been included in the International Rugby Board's senior tours programme. They will thus face top-tier nations at home each June. Martin Pengelly
Rugby League: Gale blows Wakefield away
Luke Gale led Harlequins to a 40-22 victory over fellow Super League strugglers Wakefield. Gale scored the first try, set up two for Chris Bailey and Luke Dorn and kicked 12 points. Tony Clubb also scored before a Dale Morton try opened Wakefield's account. Chris Melling, Chad Randall and Jamie O'Callaghan added tries for Quins, with Julien Rinaldi, Jarred Hickey and Paul Johnson going over for Wakefield.
Triathlon: Brownlee at the double
Britain's Alistair Brownlee won a second successive world series triathlon in Kitzbühel to take the lead in the overall standings. He was first out of the water, tied for the lead after the cycle leg, then powered home on the run to beat Alexander Brukhankov of Russia by 44 seconds. Brukhankov moved into second overall; Javier Gomez and Jonathan Brownlee, Alistair's brother, did not race.
