The three-time Olympic champion successfully defended his individual pursuit title at the Beijing Games last year before revolutionising himself as a road racer, equalling Britain's best ever result - set by Robert Millar in 1984 - of fourth in July's Tour de France.
The 29-year-old has long been linked with a move from Team Garmin-Transitions to Team Sky, the British-look road team led by British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford, and has agreed a four-year deal to become the seventh Briton - after Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Russell Downing, Peter Kennaugh, Chris Froome and Steve Cummings - to join.
