Cycling: Hoy makes it three golds again with keirin charge

Sir Chris Hoy roared to victory in the keirin on the fifth day of the National Track Cycling Championships here at the Manchester Velodrome last night.

The triple Olympic gold medal-winner in Beijing thereby picked up his third gold of this meeting before the first round of the World Cup, which will be held in this city from next Friday. The Scot had triumphed in the individual and team sprints earlier in the week.

Hoy seized control from the start of the final to cross the line first ahead of Jason Kenny. Christian Lyte was in third place while Matt Crampton had to settle for fourth. Ross Edgar, who took Olympic silver behind his fellow Scot in the event in Beijing last year, could only finish sixth.

Hoy had led Kenny and Lyte home in the second semi-final. Edgar was second behind Crampton in the first.

Another gold medallist from Beijing, Victoria Pendleton, also claimed her third title of the championships with a commanding win in the women's keirin. Her victory was never in doubt as she went off the front early to win ahead of Becki James with Helen Scott in third place.

Planet X took the national team pursuit title in the final against Agiskoviner.

Earlier, Alex Greenfield and Dani King took victory in the women's madison ahead of the pairing of Corrine Hall and Hannah Barnes. Barney Storey and Neil Fachie recorded a lifetime best of 1min 3.436sec in the tandem invitation 1km event. Their opening lap was within world record pace.
