Calzaghe, 36, has once again suffered an injury to his hand during a light workout at his father Enzo's gym in Newbridge and it has forced the fighters to call a halt to proceedings.
There is a suggestion that the fight could be moved to November but, with Ricky Hatton on Sky Box Office and David Haye's return to the ring as a heavyweight on Setanta that month, it is far more likely that Jones and Calzaghe will fight next year.
Two months ago Calzaghe split with his promoter of 12 years, Frank Warren, and met with Jones in private in London to arrange their fight, which was first talked about eight years ago.
During the last 11 years of Calzaghe's unbroken reign as the World Boxing Organisation super middleweight champion he has withdrawn from several title fights with injuries and was known for a while as "boxing's sick note". However, his recent run of fights, including multimillion pound showdowns with Mikkel Kessler in front of over 50,000 people and Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas, were thankfully injury free.
Jones has held proper world titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and, briefly, at heavyweight .
