Giant's Causeway's trainer, Aidan O'Brien, said: "He's working away towards the Champion Stakes, but a decision won't be made until the middle of the week." The colt finished second to Observatory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last month when attempting to win a sixth consecutive Group One contest.
Montjeu is ready to return to work following his below-par fourth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp last Sunday. John Warren, who manages the racing interests of Tsega Ltd, part-owners of the colt, said: "Montjeu had a bad draw, went in last and was caught flat-footed as the stalls opened. By missing the break, he had to work on the collar and slipped on the bend. Whether he tweaked a muscle I don't know, but his action was not good in the straight and he was stiff during the week."
An alternative contest for Montjeu is the Canadian International at Woodbine a week today, for which Murghem, Fruits Of Love, Daliapour and Mutafaweq are possible British-trained runners.
Noverre has been supplemented for Saturday's Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket at a cost of £15,000. The colt was partnered on Friday in a workout at Evry by Frankie Dettori. Cd Europe, who chased Noverre home at Doncaster last time, could give a pointer to his chances in the Grand Criterium at Longchamp today.
Haydock's meeting on Wednesday is already in doubt after further heavy rain hit the course on Friday night. The track, which was already waterlogged in places, suffered a further 20mm of rain. There will be an inspection at midday tomorrow.
