McCoy pays respects to jockey killed in fall

Halliday, 20, a conditional rider attached to Sue Smith's Yorkshire yard, died in hospital of head injuries. McCoy said: "It's horrifically sad for his family. He was only 20 with his career in front of him and even if you don't know someone well, it still hits you hard."

Jockey Club spokesman Paul Struthers said: "A full review into all the circumstances of the incident is under way as part of our standard procedures."

Halliday was crushed after being unseated as his mount ran out at the third-last and slipped over on top of him, a freak sort of accident in a high-risk sport. He was the first professional to be killed in action in Britain since Richard Davies in 1996. Sean Cleary and Shane Kelly both died in Ireland in 2003.
