Macey itching to be the golden boy
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whether he wins the title or not, Dean Macey was making world champion noises before beginning his decathlon challenge tomorrow. "I want the gold and I have got to get into the face of my rivals from the start," said Macey. "I have got to put the pressure on them right from the first event. That's going to be the key.
"When we take to the blocks for the 100m I am going to unleash hell. I have done the donkey work and feel that in a few days' time I could be world champion and that is a phenomenal thought."
Macey, who has not competed in a decathlon since the Olympics last September, believes he is in the form of his life despite tearing a hamstring just a few weeks ago.
The former Canvey Island lifeguard is targeting the decathlon legend Daley Thompson's British record of 8,847 points for the 10 events – but even that might not be enough given the level of competition.
Roman Sebrle will start favourite after becoming the first man to break through the 9,000 points barrier in Austria in May. "I know I am the big-time underdog and am up against some awesome athletes," added Macey. "There is the world champion, the world record holder, the Olympic champion – and me. But regardless of whether they have put up big scores we have all got to start from scratch.
"Everyone needs a bit of luck but I have worked too hard to rely on Lady Luck. I have put 10 months of hard work into this. I am in the best shape of my life."
