Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

While England spent the day relaxing before today's third match in the Women's World Cup against the Netherlands, Scotland lost 3-0 to China, winners of the recent Champions' Trophy in Macau and the first country to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

It was a disappointing performance by Scotland who started strongly and then lost their way. An 11th minute penalty corner goal from Chuning Tang put China ahead and six minutes later Wanfeng Zhou followed up with a controversial goal.

She hit the ball illegally above her head on the volley after it had been deflected off a Scottish defender's stick. The Argentinian umpire refused to even consult with her colleague.

Scotland remain pointless from their first two games and face New Zealand, who yesterday beat Russia 3-1, in their third game tomorrow.

Argentina, with a 5-1 win over Ukraine, are the only team in Pool A on maximum points following South Korea's 3-1 win over Germany, who were reduced to nine players for a period early in the second half.
