Basketball: Victorious Sharks await 'big man'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The new "big man" is on his way - but Sheffield Sharks did not need him last night as they overwhelmed London Towers 22-8 in the fourth quarter for an 81-67 British Basketball League win at Ponds Forge.
Sharks signed the centre their fans have been craving in the shape of 6ft 10in Oliver Morton, a former McDonald's All-American High School player. Morton will bring height and power, but Sharks did the damage from long range last night with four three-pointers in the final quarter. Sharks opened the fourth 13-0, with Nate Reinking adding two more three-pointers.
The win kept Sheffield in touch with Brighton Bears and Chester Jets. Brighton won 94-84 at Thames Valley Tigers on Saturday, and Chester beat Leicester Riders 98-79.
On Saturday Towers survived a late Plymouth Raiders fightback at Crystal Palace to win 85-78 . Former England international Kojo Mensah-Bonsu, signed from a Swiss club on Friday, hit 10 points on his debut.
In the English Basketball League Manchester Magic lost 77-72 at home to London United, for whom Damian Reid top-scored with 22 points.
