Four to follow in the World Indoor Championships
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Darren Braithwaite
60 metres
Two recent defeats, one by Braithwaite, suggest that Linford Christie may have slightly lost his knack of starting. Christie's head is on the block and Braithwaite, 26, is sharper than ever, having run four personal best times this season. Better known as a relay runner, and even better as the man who dropped the baton at the 1994 European Championships, he has been held back by injuries. A lot of work has been done on his starts by his coach Mike McFarlane, who has had success with John Regis and Tony Jarrett. This could be a breakthrough for Braithwaite.
Dalton Grant
High jump
An erratic performer, this 28-year-old who won the European indoor championships last year and the European Cup in 1989 and 1991 first appeared for Britain in 1984. He won the Commonwealth Games silver medal in 1990 and was a commendable fourth in the 1991 world championships. Last summer he was overshadowed by Steve Smith, who won the Commonwealth gold while Grant trailed in fifth having been hampered by injuries. Although this weekend he will be in elevated company, he is capable of moments of medal- winning inspiration.
Ashia Hansen
Triple jump
Consistently good performances in this winter's indoor events have established this 23-year-old former long jumper as one of the top 10 in the world. Four times this winter she has improved the Commonwealth indoor record. Born in the United States, she spent six years living in Ghana. Suffered badly from nerves in last summer's European Championships but says she feels altogether more confident now and is expecting further improvements. Predicts 14.86 metres will be good enough for a medal. Her best is 14.29m, set last weekend.
Melanie Neef
400 metres
Scotland's brightest women's prospect, this 24-year-old reached the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games finals last summer and came second in the European Cup. Her improvement was recognised by inclusion in the British 4 x 400m relay squad that won in the World Cup. Used to be a sprinter, and still competes in the 60m indoors. Indeed, she set eight Scottish indoor records over 60m and 200m this winter. Says she finds the 400m "murder" but believes it may have helped her improve over shorter distances as well.
