FOR THE NOTEBOOK
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

HENRIETTA HOWARD: this nicely-bred mare contested a competitive 20-runner National Hunt flat race at Worcester on Saturday. A 14-1 shot, she burst clear in the home straight and looked the certain winner until caught close home by the well-regarded favourite, Coole Hill. That was a performance full of promise, particularly as the first two finished a long way clear of the third. (Mrs D Haine)
MUCHTARAK: performed with distinction in a seven-furlong Lingfield handicap on Saturday, finishing encouragingly into second place behind the progressive Shahid. The runner-up was tenderly handled on this, his seasonal reappearance, and would seem to be capable of picking up a decent prize in the near future. (C J Benstead)
SAGEBRUSH ROLLER: hard-luck stories from Chester's tight circuit are common currency but this seven-year-old was trapped on the rails, unable to get a run, in the 17-runner event won by Dawalib on Thursday. A well- backed second favourite, he finished only 10th, but his supporters can gain compensation soon. (J W Watts)
