Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sweden booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals as England’s potential opponents with a 1-0 victory over Switzerland.
On the final day of the last-16 stage, a nervy affair in St Petersburg was decided on one single moment that sent the Swedes through to the last-eight for the first time since 1994.
After a goalless first half, Swedish wideman Emil Forsberg drifted in from the left, opening himself up to shoot on his right foot.
However, his shot was deflected off Manuel Akanji’s foot as he attempted to sweep it clear and left goalkeeper Yann Sommer stranded as the ball found the back of the net.
The Swiss pushed on in search of a late equaliser, leaving them open on the break and the inevitable second looked close when referee Damir Skomina awarded a penalty and sent defender Michael Lang off.
A Video Assistant Review overturned that decision to a free-kick though as the contact was outside the box, and although the dismissal still stood, Ola Toivonen was unable to convert the close-range free-kick.
Sweden will now await either England or Colombia in the quarter-finals, with the two nations meeting in Tuesday’s evening match.
