The Belgian international failed to agree on a new deal at Old Trafford after holding out for wages north of £125,000 per week.
While Jose Mourinho values the combative midfielder, signed from Everton for £28m in 2013, United have refused to bow the player’s demands and with his contract ticking down he has been the subject of strong interest from AC Milan, leading Turkish clubs and a smattering of mid-table Premier League sides.
30-year-old Fellaini knows that this will likely be his last big contract in the game and is thus taking his time over a decision and ensuring that he gets the best deal for him and his family.
There remains a chance that he stays with United on reduced terms but when asked if he would return to Manchester next season, Fellaini’s simple response was: "You will know soon."
United have already moved to reboot their midfield this summer, unloading £52m to sign Brazilian International Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
But with Michael Carrick also retiring this summer, Fellaini’s departure would leave a second hole in the Old Trafford club’s midfield that Mourinho would be keen to fill.
The top target there remains Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, the towering Serbian who has sparkled at points during his country’s World Cup campaign.
A deal for the 23-year-old playmaker remains difficult though, with Juventus and Real Madrid prepared to rival any concrete offer for the player and Lazio fully aware that he could command a nine-figure transfer fee.
