From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

As you’ve probably noticed by now if you have been using the internet today, Twitter is now 10 years old.

The social network has been marking its special day by encouraging users to tweet with the #LoveTwitter hashtag because on 21 March 2006, at 9.50pm Pacific Standard Time, founder and current CEO Jack Dorsey sent the first-ever tweet - “just setting up my twttr”.

It’s alright, if not exactly as memorable as "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you”, and all the commotion got us wondering - what were the first tweets sent by a selection of tweet-friendly footballers and were they any more interesting?

Using the #FirstTweet tool, we’ve dug back through the accounts of several ex-pros.

It turns out, despite many using variations on the ‘welcome to my official Twitter account’ and ‘lol I don’t know how to work this’ standards, a few of them had something funny, interesting or just downright bewildering to say.
