From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. West Brom have bulked up their squad ahead of Tuesday's transfer deadline by signing former Wigan player Paul Scharner on a two-year contract.

Scharner, who can play in various defensive and midfield roles, joins West Brom as a free agent.

He has been earmarked for midfield duty by Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo, with the midlands club claiming they fended off competition from rival Premier League clubs to sign the 30-year-old Austrian.

Di Matteo told West Brom's official website: "I'm delighted to welcome Paul to the club.

"He is exactly the type of player we've been looking to bring in because he is a proven Premier League player, having performed consistently well in the top flight for the past four and a half years."
