Wayne Rooney transfer talk: Where will the Manchester United striker end up?

David Moyes has used his first press conference as manager of Manchester United to state Wayne Rooney won't be sold.

However, in modern day football, that won't be certain until the transfer window closes in a couple of months time. Should the England international leave Old Trafford this summer, where might he end up? We take a look at the options...

Chelsea

The blues are in the market for a new striker and with PSG favourites to sign number one target Edinson Cavani, Rooney could be the best option. Firstly, Rooney would remain in England and this would obviously mean he would remain in the Premier League where he has 156 goals. Not only could Chelsea meet the reported £20m fee for Rooney but they could also pay his high salary of £250,000-a-week.

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been given money to spend this summer and the Gunners are linked with lots of players. Arsenal are very close to completing the signing of Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid for £23m and this could mean that Rooney is no longer a target anymore. But if the Higuain deal falls through or Wenger wants another striker Arsenal do have sufficient funds to bid. Again it would mean that Rooney would be in his comfort zone being in England. However, Arsenal are reportedly not prepared to meet the player's high wage demands.

PSG

The super-rich French club certainly can afford both Rooney's fee and his wage demands. However, with Cavani reportedly very close to signing for the French champions and Zlatan Ibrahimovic already there the club may no longer be in the market for a forward. New manger Laurent Blanc will desire Champions league success and Rooney, having won the trophy in 2008, would bring invaluable experience. For Rooney he may not want the cultural change and his priority could be to remain in England if he is leaving Manchester United.

Real Madrid

With Real's Higuain on the verge of signing for Arsenal it leaves only Benzema as a striker for the Spanish Giants; Carlo Ancelotti will be looking for a new man.

Several big names have been linked to the club: Liverpool's Luis Suarez, Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski and Napoli's Cavani but should those options slip out of the picture, Rooney would come into contention.

There have been on-going rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo making a return to the English champions and one possible way to complete the deal would be Rooney heading to the Spanish capital. This is the most likely way to take Rooney to the Bernabeu. Madrid is an unlikely destination as Ancelotti has his eyes firmly fixed on Liverpool's want away striker Suarez.

Bayern Munich

The Champions of Europe don't need much changing after their imperious and astonishing season but if there is one area of change it is up front. With Mario Gomez reportedly on his way out it leaves only Mandzukic. Munich desperately want Lewandowski but rivals Dortmund has refused to sell to them again. If, as expected, Lewandowski doesn't go to Munich then it leaves the door open for another forward. With no clear signs of who that might be, then if Rooney does leave the Theatre of Dreams then heading to Munich could be possible. However, it would be a big change for Rooney as he has played in England all of his career and it is questionable whether Bayern would be prepared to meet his wage demands.

Barcelona

Going to the home of the Spanish champions seems unlikely despite Barcelona's £49m Neymar urging Rooney to join him. And then there is the question of where Rooney would fit in in Barcelona's unique system. With the best player in the world Lionel Messi taking the central role Rooney would not be playing in his ideal position. Furthermore, Messi has already finished great striker's careers at Barcelona such as Eto'o and Ibrahimovic. The Nou Camp seems an unlikely place for Rooney to end up at due to their star studded attack.
