The top-two in last season’s Premier League are ready to fight for the forward who currently plays for Seria A side Fiorentina. The Italian’s confirmed the signing of Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez earlier this week in a deal worth £15m, and they will have to let Jovetic go if his £27m release clause is met.
Having appeared to miss out on Robert Lewandowski, whose move to Munich looks likely to go through next summer once his contract with fellow Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund runs out, United have turned their attention to Jovetic in an effort to boost their frontline options according to reports.
Jovetic had drawn attention from both Chelsea and Arsenal over the past year, but City boss Manuel Pellegrini had seemed to emerged as the front-runner to secure the transfer. The news will come as blow to the new manager at Eastlands, with United reported to be prepared to shell out the £120,000-a-week for Jovetic.
City are prepared to meet the £27m buy-out clause, and it remains to be seen whether United will match the fee, or whether they will look to negotiate a deal to add to their already talented attacking options.
A move for Jovetic could spell the end for current striker Wayne Rooney, whose future continues to be talked about despite David Moyes claiming Rooney will stay at Old Trafford. As reported by The Independent yesterday, Chelsea are prepared to let either Fernando Torres or Demba Ba leave the club to make way for the signing of Rooney.
