O'Neill recruits defenders
Aston Villa have agreed a fee with Manchester City for the Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne. The 29-year-old is speaking to Villa about personal terms after his position at Eastlands came under threat following Joleon Lescott's arrival from Everton. Villa also completed the £8m signing of Blackburn defender Stephen Warnock last night, on a four-year deal.
One in, one to come at Stoke
Stoke yesterday completed the signing of Robert Huth from Middlesbrough, with the Turkish international Tuncay set to follow him from Teeside. Former Chelsea defender and German international Huth joins after finalising personal terms, with Stoke expected to pay around £11m for the pair.
Smith heads to Fratton
Watford striker Tommy Smith has opted to join Portsmouth on a four-year contract, for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old had been heavily linked Reading. "I spoke to [Portsmouth manager] Paul Hart and it sounded brilliant," he said. "Everything here is what I was looking for and I'm sure I made the right decision."
Distin turns to Toffees
Everton have reached agreement to sign defender Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. The player underwent a medical last night ahead as manager David Moyes looks to replace the departed Joleon Lescott. "After Sylvain made it clear his preferred destination was Goodison, the chairman moved quickly to finalise the deal," the Everton chief executive, Robert Elstone, said of the 31-year-old's move.
