Newcastle's Peter Lovenkrands is hopeful of a move to their local rivals Sunderland. "Sunderland is certainly an interesting club. It would be attractive to stay in northern England," he said.

Blues aim to lure Bowyer

Lee Bowyer could complete a permanent move to Birmingham City over the weekend. "Lee did well for us after coming here and he would definitely be a worthy addition to the Birmingham squad," the Blues manager Alex McLeish said.

Dossena deal delayed

The Liverpool full-back Andrea Dossena's agent Roberto La Florio is still hopeful of a transfer to Juventus for his player. "I know there are some problems with [the Lyons full-back Fabio] Grosso's negotiations. We can only wait."

The former Liverpool striker Djibril Cissé (pictured) has joined Panathinaikos for a reputed €8m (£6.8m) fee. Sunderland opted not to make the Frenchman a permanent signing after last season's loan spell.

Gaël Givet, who spent much of last season on loan at Ewood Park, has finally completed his move from Marseilles, signing a four-year deal.

The former Tottenham trainee Mark Yeates has been confirmed as Middlesbrough's first summer signing. The 24-year-old winger arrives from Colchester on a three-year deal.

Brazil midfielder Felipe Melo will not be leaving Fiorentina according to the player's spokesperson, dashing Arsenal's hopes of signing the 25 year-old. "Felipe is happy at Fiorentina," said Emiliano Froldi.

Aguero happy in Madrid

Sergio Aguero has not been approached by Manchester United or any other team, according to agent Jose Segui. "I can say with certainty that the player wants to stay at Atletico [Madrid]," he said.

No bids for Villa

Despite the speculation surrounding David Villa, there have been no bids for the Valencia forward, according to a club spokesman. "I want to make it clear, we have no offer for Villa," he said.

Preston aim to keep Irvine

Preston chairman Derek Shaw has responded to rumours that West Bromwich want his manager Alan Irvine. "The decision would be down to him, if the terms of his contact were met, but this is something we would vehemently oppose," he said.
