Also a target for Stoke City, according to The Mail, the Holland international has earned seven caps for his country and scored three goals.
After talks with Toon manager Alan Pardew, Mike Ashley appears willing to sanction four transfers in the January window as the club also look into securing a deal for Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella.
Pardew tried to sign de Jong two years ago as the Magpies competed for Champions League qualification, eventually having to settle for a birth in the Europa League, but is understood to be confident of finally getting his man on a loan deal.
The 52-year-old former West Ham manager last week repeated his eagerness to sign a quality forward and insisted that the club are ready to move when one becomes available.
“We’re making sure we’re on our toes in terms of the market,” he said.
“That’s what we’re going to try to do.”
Monchengladbach director Hans Meyer suggested in November that, after falling out of favour at the Bundesliga side, de Jong would be made available for loan.
“We will possibly loan Luuk at Christmas, but definitely not to a competitor,” said Meyer.
“Our head coach, Lucien Favre, has said from the start he didn’t have 100 per cent confidence in De Jong filling the striker position, but I think we’ll find a solution.”
