Newcastle are close to signing Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong after it was announced he has headed to Tyneside for a medical.

The Dutch forward will undergo tests today in order that an initial loan move can be completed with the option of the deal becoming permanent.

German side Gladbach have confirmed the news on their official Twitter account, saying: "Luuk de Jong is not training with the Foals today. The striker is currently on his way to Newcastle for medical checks."

However it is not all good news for Newcastle supporters who look set t lose midfielder Yohan Cabaye to Paris St Germain.

De Jong has reportedly been a target of Alan Pardew for a long time, the manager even attempting to sign the 23-year-old last summer before losing out to Gladbach in a £12.6million switch from FC Twente.

However, the move has not been a success for De Jong and he has struggled to cement a first team place.

Newcastle have been keen to improve their striking ranks with only the on loan Loic Remy, the hideously out of form Papiss Cisse and the ageing and soon to be out of contract Shola Ameobi on their books.

De Jong's first game for the club, if a deal is struck, could be Saturday's derby game with Sunderland.
