Alan Pardew's side are trying to replace Yohan Cabaye who moved to Paris St Germain on Wednesday.
Cabaye signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with PSG in a deal reported to be around the £11m mark.
Grenier, who is 23, said he was unaware of any potential transfer.
"I don't know much about it. I read the press and I saw my name written next to Newcastle, but I don't have more information than this," he told French media.
"The transfer window closes on Friday so we'll see.
"I've still got lots of objectives I want to achieve personally and collectively with Lyon. I'm not thinking about the transfer window and transfer rumours."
So far Newcastle's only signing of the window has been Luuk de Jong on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach.
