The Manchester United captain announced earlier this month that he would leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season.
He stated he would not move to another Premier League club and it quickly became apparent that a move to Italy was most likely.
That appears to be the case, with president Erick Thohir saying a deal is almost done for the Serbian centre-back.
"I can't saying anything other than the deal for Vidic is 90 per cent done," Thohir is quoted as saying by website FcInterNews after arriving at Milan's Malpensa airport.
"When everything is sorted we will make an announcement."
Vidic joined United in 2006 and struck up a formidable defensive partnership with Rio Ferdinand. During eight years at Old Trafford he won a host of trophies, including five Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
Despite announcing he has chosen to leave the club, David Moyes has said Vidic will remain captain until he departs.
Inter are fifth in Serie A and host struggling Cagliari on Sunday looking to close the 11-point gap separating them from third-placed Napoli who host Genoa on Monday.
