As the transfer window draws to a close, Twitter have released data on the most-tweeted about deals of the summer – and two of them have not even happened.

Manchester United, unsurprisingly, dominate the standings, having shelled out £149m on four major signings to herald Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.

Paul Pogba’s world-record breaking £89m switch from Juventus tops the charts, having been the not only the most expensive but also the most protracted transfer of the window.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pogba’s new team-mate, follows in second-place.

The Swedish frontman arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer and has made an impressive start, with four goals in his first four games for the club.

A deal that did not happen comes in third – Jamie Vardy’s mooted move to Arsenal.

The Leicester City striker spurned Arsene Wenger’s advances and elected to sign a new contract at the King Power.

Another piece of United’s summer business comes next, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s £30m move from Borussia Dortmund provoking the fourth-highest amount of tweets.

And despite the fact that Shkodran Mustafi is yet to walk through the door at the Emirates, his switch from Valencia to Arsenal rounds off the top five.

Gonzalo Higuain, Riyad Mahrez, Granit Xhaka and Alvaro Morata – all of whom were either linked to or joined Arsenal – are included in the top ten, as is Chelsea’s £32m deal for N'Golo Kanté.

Transfer news 30-08

While the Gunners, United and Chelsea dominate the rankings, you have to go some way back before finding Manchester City and Liverpool’s most-tweeted deals.

John Stones’ £47.5m arrival at the Etihad from Everton, which made him the world’s second-most expensive defender, is 13th in the list.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s £25m move from Newcastle to Liverpool ranks 15th.
