Transfer News and Speculation: 5 July
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool have completed the signing of the Italian full-back Andrea Dossena from Udinese. The left-back had been expected to make the move to Anfield for some time and after signing the Swiss right-back Philipp Degen earlier yesterday, manager Rafael Benitez made his second acquisition of the day.
Like Degen, Dossena has signed a four-year deal. The 26-year-old Serie A player, replaces John Arne Riise who left for Roma earlier this summer and joins for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £7m. He has been capped once by Italy, in a friendly last year. Degen earlier joined on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
The Australia international Harry Kewell, meanwhile, has signed a three-year contract with the Turkish champions Galatasaray, the club claimed yesterday. However, there remained some confusion over the conclusion of the deal yesterday evening, with Kewell's agent Bernie Mandic insisting the announcement is premature. Kewell, 29, turned down a contract extension at Anfield in May and entered the current transfer window as a free agent. Kewell was linked with Portsmouth, Fulham, Celtic and Roma but yesterday Galatasaray announced his signing on their website. Mandic, though, maintained: "We have not finalised a deal for Harry and it's down to two possibilities. People will be notified if and when Harry decides on one of the options which may be around noon on Saturday European time."
Impact of Hughes persuades Dunne against moving on
Manchester City captain Richard Dunne has ended speculation about his future by signing a new four-year contract. The 28-year-old, whose previous deal expired next summer, had been linked with a move away from the club, but following talks with the new manager Mark Hughes, has decided to sign on until 2012. "My first priority is, was and always has been to stay at City because I feel really settled here," he said. "When Mark Hughes got the job, I think everyone was really pleased and I was thrilled that he seemed to make it a priority to sort my contract out."
Phillips to decide about switch to Birmingham City
West Bromwich manager Tony Mowbray expects to find out over the weekend whether his veteran striker Kevin Phillips will remain with the club or make the switch to Birmingham. Phillips, Albion's leading scorer last season with 24 goals, is attracting the interest of the Blues manager Alex McLeish. Baggies manager Mowbray is keen to keep the 34-year-old and held talks with him yesterday. He expects to know in the next 48 hours whether Phillips will stay for a third season. He said: "I am pretty sure it will be resolved one way or the other in the next day or two."
