Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sir Alex Ferguson's hopes of fending off Real Madrid's interest in Cristiano Ronaldo were dealt a blow when the Uefa president, Michel Platini, said the Spanish side's courting of the winger has been "normal".

United had an official complaint against Real rejected by Fifa two weeks ago. Now Platini has said this summer's public war of words has been blown out of proportion. "Every club in the world would like to have Ronaldo," he said. "It's part of the system we have today. Players move from club to club. If [Real Madrid] have the finances, they can do it; if they don't have the money, then they can't."

Ferguson to loan out Campbell

According to reports yesterday, the Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has promised Premier League newcomers Hull City first option on taking the 20-year-old striker Fraizer Campbell on loan again next season at the KC Stadium. Campbell spent last season on loan at Hull, scoring 15 goals in 34 games. The Tigers' manager Phil Brown wants to make Campbell a permanent signing, and had a £4m offer rejected. The Aston Villa manager, Martin O'Neill, is also reported to be interested in the England Under-21 international.

Keane targets Spain's Guiza

Sunderland manager Roy Keane is rumoured to be considering a move for Daniel Guiza, who scored for Spain in their Euro 2008 semi-final win against Russia. The Real Mallorca striker has attracted interest from Spurs, Manchester City, Barcelona and Roma. His £40,000-per-week wages would fit in Keane's wage structure.

Bessone flies in to join Swans

Swansea have signed the Argentine left-back Federico Bessone on a free transfer from the Spanish club Espanyol. The Swansea manager, Roberto Martinez, said of the 24-year-old, who was on loan at Gimnastic last season: "He will fit into the British game well and has shown a great desire to sign for Swansea."

Jewell ready to fight for Bodde

Derby County manager Paul Jewell knows he faces competition from Middlesbrough for the signature of the Swansea midfielder Ferrie Bodde. Negotiations between Derby, relegated from the top flight last season, and Swansea have stalled after their £2m offer for the Dutchman was rejected. Premier League newcomers West Bromwich Albion have also been linked with the 26-year-old and Jewell said: "I would imagine there are a few clubs in for Ferrie because he's a good player. I know Middlesbrough were interested, so we're up against some decent competition. If West Brom are in for him, we've got to try to get over that hurdle. We'd just like the opportunity to speak to the player."
