Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has snapped up Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer after the Australia goalkeeper decided to leave Middlesbrough. Schwarzer has signed a two-year contract at Craven Cottage having rejected approaches from both Juventus and Bayern Munich. Hodgson has made shoring up his defence his first priority, but Schwarzer's arrival could mean the departure of the former Finland international keeper Antti Niemi, although he still has a year left on his contract. Kasey Keller, who has recently replaced Niemi as first choice, is out of contract and is expected to retire.
Ancelotti eyeing Adebayor
Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has targeted the Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o or Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor as potential signings. The Palermo striker Amauri is also an option, although the Brazilian appears close to signing for Serie A rivals Juventus. "One of the four. They are all perfect," Ancelotti said when asked about his plans to strengthen his attack before next season. "They are centre-forwards with the characteristics needed to solve our problems. We need flexible forwards who can help the squad in defence, too."
Davis likely to leave Pompey
Portsmouth's Sean Davis, Lauren and Milan Baros could be on their way out of Fratton Park after it was revealed that none of them turned up for the FA Cup winners' parade in the town on Sunday. Davis and Lauren, who were both left out of the Cup final squad, have a year left on their contracts, while Baros is on loan from the French champions Lyons.
Matteo heads City clear-out
Dominic Matteo, goalkeeper Russell Hoult and defender Marlon Broomes have all been released as Stoke City begin to prepare for life in the Premier League. Matteo, the club captain, was out for most of the season with a foot injury, while Hoult went on loan to Notts County. Broomes has been sidelined by an Achilles injury since April 2006.
£12m Nasri deal placed in doubt
Arsenal face strong competition for Marseilles' France midfielder Samir Nasri. The 20-year-old was reported to have already visited London to finalise the terms of a £12m move to the Gunners but other interested parties could yet scupper manager Arsène Wenger's plans. Nasri's agent Jean-Pierre Bernes said: "It is true, we are looking at an offer from Arsenal which interests Samir, but other offers have also come through to me. Outside of England, there are those from Spain and Italy."
* Yesterday's completed moves: Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough) to Fulham; Free, Ashley Williams (Stockport) to Swansea; £400,000
