Striker Marcus Bent is poised to sign a long-term deal with the club. Bent scored seven goals for the Latics during a season-long loan from Charlton. A fee of around £1m has already been agreed between the two clubs for Bent, who celebrates his 30th birthday on Monday. "We just need to sort the personal terms. The contract is there and I am very happy to come to Wigan," he said. "This is the club I want to stay at and hopefully the manager will soon be talking to my agent and we can sort things out."
Goalkeeper Carlo Nash and winger David Cotterill look set to leave the JJB Stadium if Stoke and Sheffield United can agree deals.
Wenger includes Vela in plans
Manager Arsène Wenger has promised Carlos Vela (right) a place in his first-team plans next season when the Mexican youngster returns from his loan spell at Osasuna. Wenger wants to use the 19-year-old in a central attacking role at the Emirates Stadium following an impressive stint in Spain. "We have applied for a work permit for him now," said Wenger. "And he will be involved with the first team next season. He has played the season at Osasuna on the left wing and he had to work hard there. But for me it is not his position – he is a central striker, an Eduardo Silva type."
Burnley fail to tempt Cole
The club will not be signing Andy Cole after the striker failed to agree suitable terms with the Coca-Cola Championship club. The former Manchester United and England forward enjoyed a successful three-month loan spell with the Clarets from Sunderland and had expressed a desire to join them, but after his release by the Black Cats Cole will not be returning to Turf Moor.
Davis yet to seal Rangers future
Steven Davis insists he has been playing so many games with Rangers that he has not had time to consider whether he might stay at Ibrox. The midfielder signed on loan from Fulham in January and has helped the club reach the Uefa Cup final and remain in the hunt for a domestic treble. Walter Smith is keen to keep Davis but the Northern Irishman said: "Nothing has been discussed."
Everton willing to fund Moyes
Talks between David Moyes and Bill Kenwright over the size of Everton's transfer kitty are expected to continue in London over the weekend, with Moyes pressing the chairman yesterday for the kind of investment which will see the club take a step into the top four. Though chief executive Keith Wyness said the club was keeping the talks "close to our chest" he indicated a willingness to purchase the kind of big names needed to advance the club when he said the club was "well aware that we have got to build on the success we have." Wyness continued: "We will support David to make the squad the best it can be. I am speaking to agents all the time. Nine out of 10 don't come to anything but you have to know what is in the market place."
