Valencia midfielder David Silva spoke of his delight yesterday after agreeing a new deal with the club that should end speculation about his future. Silva had been linked with a move away from Valencia this summer – to Old Trafford among other mooted destinations – but the 22-year-old Spain international has committed himself to the La Liga side by agreeing new terms to his existing contract, which runs until 2013. "I'm very happy here," he said. "The people treat me very well. My first option was to continue with Valencia. For me family comes first. They have always helped me with everything. It is important that they are very well, like me." Silva, who moved to the Mestalla from Celta Vigo in 2006, will be hoping for better times ahead for Valencia following a tough campaign. Despite winning the Copa del Rey, Valencia ended up being sucked into the relegation battle. They have a new coach in Unai Emery and although they have been quiet on the transfer front, Silva said: "There are not many signings this year but we hope to recover players for the squad because last season was difficult. We are in the Uefa Cup, we are thinking of the league and we hope to have some very good times. The situation here is calmer now and this is important for me."

Arsenal accept Boro bid for Hoyte

Middlesbrough's offer for defender Justin Hoyte has been accepted by Arsenal, as a replacement for the new Aston Villa recruit Luke Young. Young moved to Villa Park last week, a year after joining Boro from Charlton. Last summer Hoyte was linked with Villa but Wenger announced he would not be sold and would compete with Bacary Sagna for the right-back spot. Hoyte joined Arsenal as an 11-year-old and made his first-team debut in 2003 but failed to establish himself as a first choice. The defender, who has also made 18 appearances for England Under-21s, was an unused substitute in Wednesday's Champions' League qualifier against FC Twente.

Celtic linked with German defender

Celtic have expressed interest in Germany defender Alexander Madlung, 25, according to the Wolfsburg player's agent. Madlung is the latest centre-back to be linked with Parkhead following a failed bid to sign the Romanian Gabriel Tamas. Celtic are also thought to have made a bid for Cardiff defender Glenn Loovens, who Rangers also tried to sign.

Pulis promises to make late signings

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis says he will work around the clock to bring in more new faces before their Premier League bow at Bolton tomorrow. Pulis has found it "incredibly difficult" to add to last season's squad. But he said negotiations were ongoing with a number of players to build on the arrival of Dave Kitson, Seyi Olofinjana and Thomas Sorensen.
