Spurs have already signed Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica and Steven Bergwijn in a £27m deal from PSV, while earlier this week they made Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move from Real Betis permanent for £27.2m.
However, José Mourinho is desperate for Tottenham to round off their window by signing a new striker, given that Harry Kane is expected to miss the rest of the 2019/20 campaign having undergone surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring.
And The Independent understands that Spurs are likely to make a second offer for Willian José, having already had an introductory offer of £10m rejected by Sociedad.
The 28-year-old Brazilian has made no secret of his desire to move to north London and was last night left out of the club’s 3-1 home win over Osasuna despite having been named as part of the matchday squad on Tuesday.
Sociedad had initially demanded £21m for the striker — who has a release clause of £58.8m — but may be willing to lower their demands given his reluctance to play for the club since Tottenham’s interest was made public.
It is understood that a deal for 33-year-old Olivier Giroud is incredibly unlikely given Chelsea’s reluctance to strengthen one of their direct rivals for a Champions League place next term.
Meanwhile Krzysztof Piątek — who Spurs have been persistent linked with this window — is today expected to complete a £22.8m move from AC Milan to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign full-back Danny Rose on loan for the rest of the season.
Rose, 29, has made just five appearances since Mourinho became manager in November and has long been open to a move back north, having started his professional career at Leeds United.
Kyle Walker-Peters also departs the club on loan, joining Southampton for the remainder of the season.
Tottenham’s attempts to find midfielder Victor Wanyama a new club meanwhile remain unsuccessful.
Daniel Levy has been holding out for a fee in the region of £10m for the 28-year-old, who is in the final 18 months of his contract and has made just one appearance since Mourinho’s arrival.
Former club Celtic are understood to have a longstanding interest in bringing Wanyama back to the Scottish Premiership, but his £62,000-per-week wages plus Levy’s exceedingly optimistic valuation have deterred the club from making an offer.
Spurs previously agreed a £13m deal for Wanyama to join Belgian side Club Brugge last summer, only for the player to veto the move.
