Newcastle have told Tottenham they’ll need to pay £25m if they’re to stand any chance of signing Magpies midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum joined Newcastle last summer and the club are reluctant to let him go after recently losing Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace.

Having signed for the Teesside club for £14m it appears Newcastle are looking to ward off any interest with the £25m asking price.

But the midfielder has reportedly expressed his desire to leave. After helping his former side PSV Eindhoven to win the Eredivise title two seasons ago, the prospect of Championship football will represent a step backwards for the player.

Alongside teammate Moussa Sissoko, the Dutch international has stated his intention to play at the highest level next season and would welcome a move back to the Premier League.

Tottenham had initially emerged as the side to prise him away from the Toon. Mauricio Pochettino has been looking to boost his attacking options and had considered bringing the midfielder to White Hart Line.

The £25m asking price may prove too much though, particularly for a player whose form faded towards the second half of the season.

Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in 38 appearances for the Magpies but went 16 games without finding the back of the net as Newcastle succumbed to relegation.

Spurs are already in talks with AZ Alkmaar over a deal for Holland international Vincent Janssen. The striker scored 27 goals for his side last season and was awarded the golden boot.

With the deal expected to be finalised soon, Tottenham’s interest in fellow Dutchman Wijnaldum could therefore subside.

The London club aren’t the only side to be linked with Wijnaldum though. Both Everton and Roma have reportedly expressed interest in the Newcastle player.
