Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying a characteristically frantic end to the summer transfer window.

The summer began with Mauricio Pochettino making it plain to chairman Daniel Levy that he wanted to complete several signings to overhaul his squad.

Things started very positively. Spurs ended their long wait for a transfer by signing 18-year-old winger Jack Clarke from Leeds United. The youngster was immediately sent back to Elland Road on loan.

Then, on the same day, Spurs secured one of Pochettino’s primary transfer targets. In a move that made headlines across Europe, the north London club broke their transfer record to recruit the highly-rated Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, for a £55.4m fee.

However, the club’s attempts to bolster their squad further have been frustrated and several deals remain up in the air on transfer deadline day.

Incomings

The Independent understands that a deal has been struck with Juventus to sign Paulo Dybala and that the Argentina international has agreed personal terms with the club. However, his labyrinthine image rights are currently holding up the deal and will prove difficult to untangle in the next 10 hours.

A deal has also been agreed with Real Betis for the midfielder Giovani Lo Celso. The La Liga side accepted a £60m offer late on Wednesday afternoon and the 23-year-old is expected to arrive in London later today.

However, that has seen the club’s attempts to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting go cold. The Portugal international has been desperate to sign for Spurs but the two clubs remain at loggerheads over his price tag.

Spurs are meanwhile expected to complete the £25m signing of Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon today. Levy’s reluctance to meet Fulham’s asking price has seen the deal go down to the wire, but a deal was finally struck between the two clubs on Wednesday ahead of a Thursday announcement.

One player who will not arrive at Tottenham’s training ground today is Philippe Coutinho. Spurs had hoped to take advantage of the Brazilian’s struggles at the Camp Nou by bringing him back to the Premier League on a short-term deal.

But the 27-year-old has little interest in leaving the club on loan. Barcelona would meanwhile demand close to £100m for a permanent deal – placing him way beyond Tottenham’s price range.

Outgoings

Christian Eriksen’s potential move to Manchester United has broken down. United were given little encouragement as talks progressed and those close to the player insist any move at this point would be made for career and lifestyle reasons.

The 27-year-old is said to want a change from England, with Spain – and specifically Real Madrid – his primary choice. That could see this deal run beyond this evening’s 5pm deadline.

Danny Rose was also made available for sale by Tottenham but is unlikely to leave the club this late into the summer. No English club has expressed a serious interest in the 29-year-old while Spurs will be reluctant to let him leave for a European side once the 2019/20 campaign is underway.
