Tottenham are reported to have agreed a deal for the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Paulinho for more than £15 million.

The move would be seen as a major coup for the club as they look to strengthen their squad to compete for Champions League qualification once more.

The 24-year-old is currently on international duty at the Confederations Cup in his homeland, and he has become an integral part of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side, scoring against England recently at the Maracana.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas announced earlier this week that he has been assured that Gareth Bale will not be leaving the club by chairman Daniel Levy, and he would like to secure the services of at least two more attacking players to support Bale.

They are believed to be in talks with Barcelona over the transfer of David Villa, who is another currently on Confederations Cup duty, with the striker linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer.

Levy is also set for talks with Bale to inform him he will not be sold for any price, although Spurs’ resolve will be tested to the extreme limits should Real Madrid offer a fee of around £60m as reported.

Tottenham have their eyes on other targets, with fellow-Brazilian Bernard and Argentinian forward Erik Lamela on the radar for the north London club.

Lamela has had an impressive season at Roma, the club that Spurs’ new technical director Franco Baldini spent last season with, and he could very well trigger a move for the 21-year-old.

Paulinho had been linked with top European clubs such as Paris St-Germain, Chelsea and Inter Milan, but it is believed that Tottenham have beaten off the competition to secure his services from Corinthians.

AVB has been frustrated with the lack of transfer progress in recent times, having missed out on Brazilian midfielder Oscar – who is now at his former club Chelsea – Portuguese defensive midfielder Joao Moutinho and Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao.

Should they complete the signing of Paulinho, Spurs could sell both Tom Huddlestone and Scott Parker as they continue to rack up the number of players than can feature in the midfield.
